A true reggae scholar on our festival grounds! David Katz is not only a DJ but also an author, journalist, photographer and speaker. Katz, American but residing in London, wrote several books about reggae such as People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee "Scratch" Perry and Caribbean Lives: Jimmy Cliff. He gives lectures about Carribean music and culture and worked on a large number of documentaries and books. Additionally the professor loves the turntables. In Brixton he organises monthly Dub Me Always nights, where he conjures the tastiest ska, rocksteady, reggae and foundation dancehall from the speakers with the help of special guests. He has performed with Lee Scratch Perry, Horace Andy, The Heptones, Aswad and Mad Professor. Clearly we're in good hands on Friday at the Skaville!
Ras Digby is a seasoned artist with over 45 years of experience. This legendary selector co-founded Sir Jessus Sound from West London in the early 70s. His close ties with Jamaican producers and even Bob Marley and the Wailers ensured Sir Jessus's access to the coolest dub plates. In 1974 Sir Jessus's record label was founded. Although the sound system eventually split, Ras Digby has always continued to spin for other sounds who were more than happy to have his skills and enthusiasm. In his own words: “I am spreading the vibes, doing Jah work, continually.”
