Dit jaar gaat in de Reggae Circus Tent (nieuw en te vinden op het hoofdterrein, naast de cocktails!) voor de eerste keer een Dread Poëtry show door. Wij willen Rasta-, Reggae- of Dread-dichters de kans geven om hun boodschap van liefde en woede, vrede en revolte uit te dragen. Op zaterdag 2 augustus kunt u de shows volgen tussen de optredens van het hoofdpodium door.

Clifton Joseph is de artiest die dit jaar ons podium onveilig maakt met knallende lyrics en snijdende rhymes. Deze in Toronto wonende (born in Antigua) Dub Poet heeft de reputatie om beelden van de straat in vlijmscherpe zinnen te gieten die, aangedreven door ritmes van Reggae en Jazz, de toeschouwer verweesd achterlaten. Hij trad reeds op in Noord Amerika, Engeland en de West Indies en doet nu voor het eerst België aan. Hij won reeds ontelbare muziek-, voordracht- en poëzieprijzen, zoals de Peter Tosh Memorial Award, de Chicago Film Festival’s Silver Fleece Award en een Gemini Award. Clifton krijgt wijdverspreide erkenning voor zowel zijn doortastende commentaren als zijn zinderende voordrachten. Zijn schrijf- en vertelstijl tast op onnavolgbare wijze het grensgebied tussen woord en stem af. Clifton Joseph is tegelijkertijd een man van de straat én van de analyse. Hij smelt poëzie, politiek en polemiek samen tot een kletterende waterval van woord en dramatiek. De bezoekers van Reggae Geel zullen kennis maken met een Dub Dichter die het concept poëzie naar een hoger niveau tilt.

Dread Poetry: Slam Bam

This year you can witness, for the first time, our newest spectacle: “Dread Poetry: Slam Bam”. We want to give Rasta-, Reggae-, or Dread-poets the chance to carry out their message of love and rage, peace and revolution. On Saturday the second of August you can see the show in between of the performances on the main stage. “The Dread Poetry: Slam Bam” will take place in the new and original Reggae Circus Tent, which can be found longside the cocktail stall. 

Clifton Joseph is the artist that will cut our stage in half with his sharp rhymes this year. This Tortonto based Dub Poet has been around the bush. Born in Antigua, he tempers streetwise imagery with a jazz sensibility. Clifton Joseph has performed across North America, in England and in the West Indies, building a reputation as one of dub poetry's key ambassadors. Winner of  innumerable music, performance and poetry awards, including the Peter Tosh Memorial  Award, the Chicago Film Festival's Silver Fleece Award, and a Gemini Award, Joseph is as  widely recognized for his perceptive commentary as for his brilliant performances. He has  a reading style that tests the range of word and voice, taking its cues from a crossfire of Reggae rhythms, jazz and hip-hop. The simultaneously streetwise and self-mocking Joseph makes poetry, politics and polemics live and breathe through his dancing, singing, and dramatic delivery.
It’s his first visit to Belgium, we’re sure it’s going to be one to never forget!
