The Pioneers helped lay the very foundations of Jamaican music as we know it today. Formed in Kingston in the early 1960s by Sydney and Derrick Crooks and Winston Hewitt, and later joined by the soulful Jackie Robinson and George Dekker, The Pioneers evolved from ska and rocksteady into early reggae icons.
Their breakthrough hit “Long Shot Kick de Bucket” became a skinhead reggae anthem in the UK, and tracks like “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” and “Samfie Man” stormed the charts, opening the doors for reggae’s international rise.
Their sound—upbeat, soulful, and packed with unforgettable vocal harmonies—helped fuel the later 2-Tone ska movement and remains pure sunshine for every new generation of music lovers.
Still going strong, The Pioneers are about to light up Reggae Geel 2025 with their signature blend of joy, rhythm and classic reggae energy. Expect timeless hits, big smiles, and a history lesson you can skank to!
