The Skatalites
FRIDAY 31 JUL - Gold Stage

COUNTRY: Jamaica

GENRE: Ska / Rocksteady / Jamaican Jazz
š„Formed in Kingston in 1964 ā the band that helped define ska and set the blueprint for what reggae would become.
š„The original line-up featured Jamaican music giants like Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Jackie Mittoo and Lloyd Knibb.
š„Their playing is all over the foundations: Studio One-era cuts, instrumentals, and rhythms that shaped generations of bands after them.
š„They won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1998 (āHi-Bop Skaā) ā proof that the originals still hit decades later.
The Skatalites are pure Jamaican foundation music: sharp horns, rolling swing, jazz chops and that skanking pulse that started it all. Born in the heat of Kingstonās studios and dancehalls, they didnāt just play the soundtrack of ska: they wrote the language.
Their sound is tight but joyful: melodies that dance, solos that flex, and rhythms that feel timeless, whether youāre a ska head, a reggae historian, or just here for the groove.
Live, itās musicianship first and vibe always: big brass energy, crisp drums, and classics that still light up a crowd like itās 1964 again.
